A native of southeastern Pennsylvania and birder since the age of 9, Nathaniel’s interest in birds and the natural world was first sparked by the natural spectacle of shorebird migration along the Delaware Bay. After reading a ragged old Peterson Field Guide from cover to cover, as well as Jean Craighead George’s book My Side of the Mountain, Nathaniel was hooked on birding and nature study and has been ever since. He competed in the World Series of Birding, a 24-hour birding competition held annually in New Jersey, with teams from the Upper Main Line YMCA in Berwyn, PA throughout high school. In 2013, Nathaniel’s team “The B.B. Kingfishers” won the event, the first time a group of high school students had done so. During his undergraduate studies at the University of Vermont, Nathaniel assisted in teaching classes on Ornithology and environmental education. In the summer of 2017, Nathaniel worked as a field technician for The Bobolink Project, where he mist-netted Bobolinks and Savannah Sparrows, located and monitored nests, and tracked the movements of color banded birds. He graduated with Honors from the University of Vermont with a BS in Wildlife Biology, writing his honors thesis on dispersal response to nest failure of Bobolinks. The following summer he worked for the Maine Breeding Bird Atlas, conducting point counts and remote bird atlasing in the Downeast region of Maine.
