Margaret Cheney is a commissioner on the Vermont Public Utility Commission, which regulates utility matters across the state. She previously served four terms in the Vermont Legislature, where she was vice chair of the House Natural Resources and Energy Committee and was active in renewable energy legislation.
Margaret grew up in Malaysia, the Netherlands, Nicaragua, and India. After graduating from Harvard University in 1974, she was a newspaper reporter in California and later managing editor of The Washingtonian magazine in Washington, DC, from 1978 to 1989, when she moved to Norwich. Before her election to the Vermont Legislature, she taught Spanish and environmental science at Sharon Academy and served nine years on the Norwich and Dresden school boards. She is married to Vermont Congressman Peter Welch and has two sons and a daughter.
