Vermont Atlas of Life Map of the Week: Rough-legged Hawk

November 7, 2013 by Kent McFarland  |  no responses yet

map3Keen birders have spotted the annual arrival of Rough-legged Hawk, a buteo of the north that winters here in Vermont. They are most often found in the Champlain Valley where there is ample open areas for hunting. Their winter territory can cover up to six square miles.

Thanks to the power of citizen science, Vermont eBird, a project of the Vermont Atlas of LIfe, has hundreds of thousands of bird observations logged into the database. Its a treasure trove of information on Vermont’s birds. Rarely does a bird species enter Vermont’s airspace without being detected by watchful eyes.

A co-founder of VCE, Kent is a conservation biologist, photographer, writer and naturalist with decades of experience across the Americas.
