    Description of Habitat

    Weedy farm pond

    Behaviors Observed

    Feeding & preening along pond edge with occasional bobbing motion. Flew off with 3 Killdeer in tight group as if they were traveling together.

    Description of Vocalizations

    None heard

    Verbal Narrative & Description of Observation

    While scanning farm pond for waterfowl & Killdeer observed a shorebird feeding along the pond edge. realized it wasn't a Killdeer so but the scope on it. At a distance it looked like it had short greenish legs and was doing an occasional bob which made me think Solitary but as I looked at photos after I realized it was a L Yellowlegs.

    Relative Size & Shape

    Shorebird shape with robin size body.

    Head

    Crown brown with light supercilium & eye ring with streaked brown cheeks.

    Feet & Bill

    Yellow legs & thin dark bill.

    Upper Back

    Dark & white spotted

    Lower Back & Rump

    Dark & white spotted

    Wings

    Dark & white spotted. Did not see open.

    Breast, Belly, Flanks, Under Tail Coverts

    Brownish streaked chest & flanks. Belly white

    Tail

    Was unable to see rump when it flew. Tail barred.

    IMPORTANT: What similar species were eliminated when making the identification and how was this bird different?

    Ruled out Solitary because of longish yellow legs. Ruled out G Yellowlegs because of shorter straight bill.
