    Moderate breeze, temps about 20, overcast. Significant blizzard had come through the area the day before

    8x40 binouclars. Also viewed through borrowed spotting scope. 300mm lens for photos

    Description of Habitat

    Lake Champlain, somewhat near shore. Ice extended about 100 yards before open water. Goose was in with large number of canada geese. A few ducks around also

    Behaviors Observed

    Swimming initially, then bedded down along edge of ice with other canada geese

    Description of Vocalizations

    Did not hear anything individually, several hundred canada geese in immediate area

    Verbal Narrative & Description of Observation

    Lighter colored back compared to surrounding canada geese, white edges on feathers, tan, slightly orangish breast, orange on nose.

    Slightly smaller than surrounding canada geese, shorter neck

    lighter than surrounding canada geese, white tips on feathers

    Lower Back & Rump

    Not visible, swimming or bedded down


    Did not see wings open

    Breast, Belly, Flanks, Under Tail Coverts

    tannish, slightly orangeish tinted breast,

    IMPORTANT: What similar species were eliminated when making the identification and how was this bird different?

    Thought it could be a Greater White-fronted Goose at first, but no white on face, darker bill
