Community Science Awards

Community scientists make our work possible. Whether they awake before dawn to document mountain birds, paddle a lake during our annual LoonWatch, or add their biodiversity sightings to iNaturalist, each volunteer plays a valuable part in VCE’s research projects.

Each fall, we recognize members of our community science community with awards for their years of service or for their outstanding efforts in a particular year. You will find details about each award and the individuals who have received it over the years below.

Julie Nicholson Community Science Award

Julie Nicholson’s extraordinary passion and commitment to birds and conservation remain an inspiration to all of us here at VCE and many others across Vermont.

Julie-Nicholson-bikingJulie was a consummate community scientist and VCE volunteer. She was among the few birders to participate in both Vermont Breeding Bird Atlas projects. As a founding member of the Vermont Bird Records Committee, Julie was the de facto and dedicated “librarian” of bird records in Vermont.

In honor of Julie’s rich life outdoors and her decades of invaluable contributions to community science projects around the state, we established the Julie Nicholson Community Science Award in 2009.

Each year, we present this lifetime achievement award to a volunteer who exemplifies Julie’s lifelong commitment to community-involved science and wildlife conservation.

Bernie Paquette

VCE bee biologist Spencer Hardy first met Bernie Paquette at the 2019 Jericho-Underhill Christmas Bird Count. Soon after, he noticed that Bernie was uploading an astounding number of bee observations to iNaturalist. Since then, Bernie has become one of the bee observers in the world by number of iNat observations.

Bernie received the Julie Nicholson Community Science Award in 2025.

Community Scientist of the Year Award

VCE’s Community Scientist of the Year Award recognizes the accomplishments and dedication of volunteers who contribute to our science and conservation work. So far, four community scientists have received this semi-annual award.
