@ Alden Wicker VCE Staff Biologist, Amber Jones, shares insights from community science data.

Published Research

For decades, VCE scientists have worked to understand and conserve biodiversity across the Americas using innovative techniques. The peer-review process ensures that we produce the best possible science.

Our scientists often reach out and cooperate with other experts, as well as an army of community scientists, to explore some of the most pressing issues in conservation biology. Ultimately, we gather our data not just for ourselves but also for those researchers who may need this information in the future.

We Believe in Open Data for All

Openly available biodiversity data can be put to countless uses—even some we can’t yet imagine. However, most scientists have viewed the data they collect as something belonging to them, and have guarded it zealously, either out of fear that they would be scooped by another scientist or out of a sense that the data reflected too much hard work to simply give away. The consequence is a staggering loss of potential information.

VCE has always recognized that sharing our data is in everyone’s best interest, and has committed substantial staff time to making our observations publicly available through platforms like eBird, iNaturalist, and eButterfly. We have committed to archiving all of our scientific data in publicly available repositories for open access. The scope of this undertaking is significant—it takes time, money, and a paradigm shift in how we as scientists think about our work. These challenges are one reason why so few organizations of our size have fully embraced open science to the extent that VCE has. We are proud to be in the vanguard of open science.

We hope you’ll find some of our data useful for your work as we compile and provide access to it. If you don’t see a dataset here that you believe we might have available, please contact us.

Additional data sets are available on our Global Biodiversity Information Facility IPT server
