Alden is an environmental journalist and author who shepherds VCE’s conservation science out into the public, where it can be used by everyone from policy makers and land managers to farmers and backyard gardeners.

Prior to joining VCE, Alden was an independent journalist and author. Winner of the 2024 Society for Environmental Journalists Rachel Carson Book Award for To Dye For: How Toxic Fashion Is Making Us Sick — and How We Can Fight Back (Putnam), she has gone viral on TikTok, appeared on NPR’s Fresh Air, and has written about sustainable living for publications such as The New York Times, BBC, Mongabay News, Wired, and more.

She spent her childhood in rural North Carolina and suburban Maryland. After receiving a B.A in Communications and a B.S. in Business Administration from Washington & Lee University, she moved to New York City. Now, after 15 years of city life and world travel, she’s returned to her roots in the forest to steward a small parcel in southern Vermont.
