Something is Killing Our Loons: A Comic

2025 interdisciplinary intern Sammi Rizzo created this comic after working in the field with loon biologists Eric Hanson and Eloise Girard and attending a loon necropsy.

Sammi Rizzo

Sammi Rizzo graduated from UVM in the Class of 2025, and is now an interdisciplinary intern for summer 2025 with VCE. They will be involved in several ongoing projects throughout the season, including the Vermont Loon Conservation Project, grassland management, on-farm pollinators, the Native Plants and Pollinators Ecotype Project, and the Second Vermont Butterfly Atlas.

    Thanks for this great resource to raise awareness about the continued impact of legal lead on our loon population. We need either legislation or a petition to the fish and wildlife board that asks for a total ban on the use of lead in fishing. I am also an angler who is always picking up loose line while kayaking and stuffing it in my pockets!

    Great work Sammi! I sent this out on Facebook and already got some comments from people who are looking into it more and spreading the word to their fishing friends. The “I eat fishhooks for breakfast” guy is my favorite 🙂
