spotted-salamander-800x600The Vermont Vernal Pool Mapping Project needs volunteers to field-verify potential vernal pools.  Visit our interactive online map to see all potential pools we mapped and those that have already been verified.  The red dots on the map are those pools for which we have landowner permission to visit and field-verify.  Late-April and May are the best times to visit vernal pools.  You can download data sheets and instructions on the project webpage, as well as training materials such as the Vernal Pool Indicator Species Identification Sheet.

A co-founder of the Vermont Center for Ecostudies, Steve Faccio is a Conservation Biologist with wide ranging interests and skills as a naturalist, writer, and photographer. Much of his work is centered around forest ecology, including long-term population monitoring of forest songbirds, ecology of pool-breeding amphibians, and vernal pool mapping and conservation.
