    Egg Mass Identification Quiz

Telling apart the egg masses of a Spotted and Jefferson Salamander isn’t the easiest task for a vernal pool citizen scientist. Nor is finding them in the first place! However, you can use this quiz to help you learn to recognize and distinguish between the egg masses left behind by the springtime residents of vernal pools.

Each of the 26 photos below show the egg mass(es) of one of the following vernal pool indicator species*
― Wood Frog ― Lithobates sylvaticus
― Spotted Salamander ― Ambystoma maculatum
     Blue-Spotted Salamander ― Ambystoma lateralee
       Blue-Spotted / Jefferson Complex (tending towards Blue-Spotted)
     Jefferson Salamander ― Ambystoma jeffersonianum
    ― ― Blue-Spotted / Jefferson Complex (tending towards Jefferson)

*Except for one photo, which is not of an egg mass, but rather something produced by breeding Ambystoma salamanders.
