Across North America, grassland bird populations are dropping fast. But here in the forested Northeast, we’re finding opportunities to help these birds recover.
Grassland birds in Vermont and nearby states make use of open, grassy areas such as hayfields, pastures, old fields, and even airports. The Vermont Center for Ecostudies is working with local landowners and communities through ourNew England Grasslands Ambassadors program. In response to feedback from Upper Valley landowners and farmers, this project’s goal is to support New England landowners by providing technical assistance to improve grassland habitat through management that supports both birds and farming—two things Vermonters care deeply about!
Together, we’re helping species like Bobolinks, Eastern Meadowlarks, and others that depend on open fields to nest and raise their young.
